PREVENTION
Opioid use prevention efforts aim to stop substance use behavior before it starts by assisting individuals, families, and communities in developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to make healthy choices. Prevention practices enhance protective factors (skills, strengths, resources, supports or coping strategies) and reduce risk factors that can lead to opioid use. Effective prevention strategies should use evidence based practices (EBPs).
Activities
- Education workshops using evidence based curricula for youth and families to promote healthy and informed decision making
- Provide novel programming for youth to build resiliency and self determination, and stand as alternatives for substance use
- Outreach to bi-lingual (Spanish) and BIPOC youth
- Launch of communication campaigns with educational prevention messaging
- Strengthening community coalitions
